MISSION STATEMENT

The Front is an artist-led nonprofit exhibition space dedicated to cultivating the growth and stability of contemporary art in New Orleans. Our mission is to provide support and visibility to professional and emerging artists, prioritizing opportunities for BIPOC, LGBTQIA, and women artists. We believe that art should reflect and represent our communities, showcasing the diversity of the human experience.

ABOUT US

Since 2008, The Front has fostered innovative exhibitions, lectures, screenings, performances, and career building programs, always free and open to the public. We support artistic exploration outside of commercial constraints and bureaucratic hurdles, aiming to create a sustainable cultural economy that addresses racial inequities, economic disparities, and accessibility barriers.

Over the course of a 24 month cycle each programming member has the opportunity to curate up to four exhibitions. Our unique four-room layout and backyard allows for the possibility of up to 60 shows a year. Our open platform for exhibiting art work has led to themes that address identity, civil rights, technology and surveillance, feminism, environmental concerns including coastal land loss, and community. Over the course of 16 years The Front has gained significant recognition for its efforts. We have been invited to participate in projects at the New Orleans Museum of Art, our exhibitions have been featured in Art in America, Art Forum, ARTNews, Glasstire, Burnaway, Pelican Bomb, ArtFCity, The Gambit, The New Orleans Advocate, and Antigravity. We hold opening receptions on the Second Saturday of every month, if you’re in New Orleans, join us!

*Accessibility at the Front:
- The Front has four separate galleries and four separate entrances.
- Galleries 1 and 2 are now wheelchair accessible by a mobile ramp during open hours. (In the case that the ramp is not present, please let us know and a gallery member can promptly set it up)
- The Gallery 1 doorframe has double doors on the St. Claude side of the building that can both be opened.
- The Gallery 2 doorframe on the St. Claude side of the building is standard width.
- The interior doorframe between galleries 1 and 2 is narrower than the standard width of 36 inches.
- Gallery 4 outdoor entrance is on the 1000 block Mazant Street with a set of 4 stairs.
- Gallery 3 outdoor entrance is onto the deck in the backyard, which has a set of 3 stairs. This entrance can be accessed through a side gate, which leads to the 1000 block of Mazant Street. This entrance is currently grassy and may be difficult for a wheelchair. We are currently working on finding a way to make this entrance accessible.
