RUNNING STITCHES
(words escape me)
E Marshall
Stitching, Fabric Works.
A journal entry from a Tuesday in June, 2024.
“I am really nervous to show all of this work. Some of it is really weird and personal. [redacted…]
Some of it is just random and made up. I am trying to finish fabric pieces I started years ago. I kind of feel like I am talking to “old me” whoever they are.
I am self-conscious having self portraits on display. But making them feels really good. Stabbing a needle in and out over and over again. Building bodies. Lines creating spaces.
I was at [redacted] and [redacted] was there. I had stitching with me.
…
‘Is that embroidery you are working on?’
‘Sort of…’ I said. ‘It’s more like scribbling…’
Their eyes got wide and a polite but slightly pained look came over their face.
‘All I see are a bunch of running stitches**’
[upside down face emoji. squiggly mouth emoji]
Every time I try to explain what I do or write a statement I feel like I start at square one. I don't hold on to language very well. Words often just escape me. But the colors feel nice.”
**run·ning stitch

WHO THEY ARE
Carey Lamprecht
Oil Paintings on Linen, and Graphite & White Charcoal Drawings on Paper
Making art requires patience, persistence, and practice.
New Orleans has a vibrant community of working artists, gathering every week to practice replicating how light falls on the anatomy of a live figurative model.
When a model is positioned before the artist, one must admire their vulnerability with reverence. Sometimes, a model is seated for a long time, and sometimes, for a short time. Carey strives to create drawings and paintings that illuminate the interior world of the model. The models in this show represent a diverse cross-section of people of New Orleans. She strives to invite the viewer to share the feeling the model evokes by the illumination of light caressing their features with quiet contemplation to get a sense of who the person is beyond their exterior. There is an opening in the stillness that allows us to connect with the humanity of the subject of the painting or drawing. Carey approaches art making with curiosity, striving to learn and understand how to express more than likeness, perhaps an aspect of the consciousness and soul. In this way, we see ourselves in the art, which transfers a feeling of beauty that we can come back to over and over when we gaze at these portraits.

Carey Hope Lamprecht grew up on the Central Coast of California in a family of musicians. Carey studied figurative sculpture at Long Beach State University. Later, in 1997, she earned a BFA in Fine Art with honors from San Francisco State University, with emphases in painting, drawing, and printmaking. Afterward, Carey continued painting, switching to oil painting in a Flemish style at the urging of her teacher, David Leffel. She strives to use paint to evoke a deep sense of the portrait sitter's internal landscape, using reflected light to suggest a narrative location or a soundtrack. She lived, painted, and worked in San Francisco, CA for 25 years. Carey has been a proud resident of New Orleans for 3 years, working as a paralegal and research coordinator for a civil rights nonprofit that advocates eliminating barriers that Black and Brown voters face in the South through grassroots advocacy, research, and civil rights litigation.

Little Me Would be Proud
Trenity Thomas
Painting and Photography
I am filled with pride and gratitude when I reflect on my artistic journey. From a young age, I discovered my passion for painting and drawing in the 2nd grade, and it has been a constant source of growth and self-expression. I am forever thankful for the support of my mother and art teachers, who believed in my talent. As I grew, I expanded my creative horizons by embracing photography as a second art form, which further allowed me to flourish. Witnessing my own evolution as an artist and individual is a truly remarkable experience. I am proud of the person I have become and the art that I create, and I am grateful for the incredible journey that has led me to this moment.
